Day 9 – Great Ocean Road – Melbourne to Kinnet River

Theresa: Clint laughed when I showed him pictures of the campervan that I wanted. It was called the Spaceship and it was a minivan that had beds in the back. Well… today we picked up Espacio, our very own Spaceship for the week! The Great Ocean Road is very similar to the Pacific Coast Highway in California. You get some gorgeous scenic views of the ocean as well as the countryside. We stopped at Bell’s Beach which is a famous surfer’s coast. We didn’t know if we would see any surfers since it was winter, but we did! As we were driving along the coast, we watched the sun set over the cliffs. It was beautiful, but it also meant darkness was quickly descending on us and we needed to find a campsite quick!

We stopped for a quick bite to eat at a pier in Lornes. The owner was Greek. It was funny to hear a Greek Australian accent. He told us the Kinnet River campsite was only ½ an hour away and hopefully it was still open in the winter! We continued our drive along the coast. At one point, Clint stopped so we could look at the bright stars in the night sky. I was spellbound by the total darkness except the stars and the total silence except for the crashing waves..

We finally made it to the Kinnett River campsite. I had chosen Kinnett River as our first camping destination with our Spaceship Espacio because we would be “sleeping amongst the koalas.” The camp host even told us as we were getting our sites that koalas were definitely in the trees. After getting our van situated, Clint and I went roaming in the dark with our flashlight in search of koalas. After looking in several trees, I got a little spooked because Clint told me I was probably pissing the koalas off by shining my flashlight in their eyes while they were sleeping. I didn’t want a koala to leap out of the trees and attack me, so we went back to our van to turn in for the night.
