Day 16 - Great Barrier Reef

Theresa: The bus came to pick us up at 7:05 and we headed to the Pier to board our cruise boat, Ocean Freedom. It took about an hour and a half to get out to the reef where we were going to snorkel and scuba dive. The crew members were filled with energy as they got all 39 of us pumped up for our day at sea. We took a 30 minute crash course on scuba techniques such as remember to breath through your mouth only, slowly descend and ascend from the water, and hand signals such as cool, I’m not okay, and SHARK!

Clint and I were with the second group to dive, so we spent the time snorkeling around the area. Before we jumped in the water, the crew pointed out a huge turtle swimming nearby. He seemed unfazed by the snorkelers in the water. I was concerned the water would be freezing cold, but to my surprise, it was not. The fish looked amazing and we were swimming amongst them.

Clint: Next, we were for scuba. Our guide, Bec, was fantastic and guided us through our first diving experience. Getting suited up was quite an intricate process, but once we got in the water, it was quite easy. Bec slowly guided us down the back of the boat and then down to the bottom where we were only a few feet from the Reef.

Unfortunately, no underwater photos, but I’m sure they could not capture the beauty anyway since all the pictures and movies we’ve seen of it don’t quite do it justice. We saw a great variety of coral, plant, and animal life (and even touched some of it). The highlights were the Clown Fish, Sea Turtle, and Manta Ray. No sharks sighted, but that’s probably a good thing for Theresa. Our second stop on the boat was at a natural cay (sand island), which we snorkeled to from the boat.

We got back, cleaned up, and decided to head out for a nice dinner and visit to the casino. (I have to include a pic of us in our only set of decent clothes we brought). There is no Craps at the casinos down here so we didn’t stay long, but I did win a hundred bucks or so at Blackjack.
