Day 13 – Kangeroo Island

Clint: We decided to take a guided day tour of Kangaroo Island. It picked us up from the hotel at 6:05AM and dropped us off at 10:30 PM, though much of that is travel time. Kangaroo Island is the 3rd largest Australian island and much of the island is protected from development so many varieties of plant and animal still thrive there. After the 2 hour coach ride and 45 min ferry crossing, we began our tour at Seal Bay with Alex, our guide. I thought he was joking when he showed us the house where he was born, but he has lived on Kangaroo Island his entire life and was very proud of that and knowledgable. The sea lions that live at the bay and the surrounding waters are protected from boats and we had to be guided on the beach by a park ranger to enforce their “observation; not interaction” policy.

We had lunch and witnessed a show on local birds of prey before heading to the Remarkable Rocks. This is a huge natural rock sculpture that stands over the forests and ocean around it. We were able to climb it and see both the rocks and view from all angles.

Next was Admirals Arch, which is a cave that the ocean has dug out from the jagged rocks that surround it. Not only is the structure amazing, but seals have claimed it as their local resting area. They were engaged in all sorts of activities: fighting, sleeping, fishing, playing, etc.

We stopped by Flinders Chase National Park and a local pizza joint that Alex knew on the way back to the ferry before trekking back home.
