Day 2: Puerto Viejo: Grocery Shopping and Playa Negra

We all were up by 7AM (9AM US time), so enjoyed some pool time before we got breakfast and went grocery shopping.

We went to Playa Cocles for breakfast by the beach. We all ordered some delicious breakfast drinks while we waited. Ariadne had some delicious crepes while Theresa opted for a vegetarian breakfast which had vegetables sautéed in coconut curry.

We stopped by a local fruit stand. They cut mangos and bananas for us to try. They were delicious, so we bought them as well as some starfruit and 15 eggs! Theresa wanted to buy a portion of a jackfruit, but they only sold the whole fruit which was bigger than a watermelon, so we had to pass on it.

The grocery stores are very interesting. It is no A/C so all the vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, etc.. were stored in refrigerated containers similar to where milk and juice are stored. We picked up breakfast and dinner supplies to cook in the next few days we were in Puerto Viejo. We know we're going to have to get used to the Costa Rican heat, but it was hard to shop in such a humid store!!

Later on in the day, we walked over to Playa Negra for some beach time. The lava sand was black and the swells of the waves were huge. No one was swimming, so we were a little nervous. However, the water was calling us, so we ventured in for a quick dip. The currents were strong and the crashing waves kept pushing us in, so we didn't go that deep. The water was warm, perfect for Theresa to jump right in!

We retired early today because we had to be up by 5:30 for our pickup to go Whitewater rafting!
