Well, our adventure started out with a rude awaking! At 4:45am, we awoke to our fire alarm going off in our garage. After searching the house, we didn't find any smoke or smell of smoke. But could it be electrical?? We were nervous, but we decided it was just a faulty alarm (especially since our Uber was coming in less than an hour to take us to the airport). Fingers crossed we hope Kings' Castle will behave for our month of travel!
We will be moving around Costa Rica weekly, so we wanted to travel light especially since our last destination stated it would be a "wet landing." Each of us had a carry on and backpack, so check in at the international terminal was easy. We arrived with plenty of time and had some breakfast before boarding.
After a fairly smooth four hour flight, we landed in San Jose, Costa Rica and went to Adobe to get our 4x4 Mitsubishi. With our car came a cooler and a Costa Rican sim card. We used the sim card for one of our phones and purchased an esim card before we left for data.
Now a 4 hour drive to our first destination Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. It is a southeastern town on the Caribbean coast. Clint did a great job traversing through one lane, muddy, pot-holed roads. It was rainy (we're vacationing during the wet season, so it's going to rain a lot) and there were a lot of semi trucks as well as a lot of roads that would change directions without any notice. We would just look at which way the traffic flowed and hoped we wouldn't see any oncoming cars!
Our first AirBnB was Oso Perrezoso which is a building with two apartments with a shared pool. We took the top apartment which had 2 bedrooms. The bottom was taken by a couple with a cute 4 year old daughter. A/C is a luxury in Costa Rica and we knew we wanted it! The bedrooms had A/C, but not the kitchen and living room area. It was quite warm when we cooked.
After unpacking, we headed into town for a quick dinner at El Sendero, a restaurant right on the beach. Clint ordered an amazing fried snapper (whole fish... no filet). All our dishes came with rice and beans, salad, and fried plantains or french fries.
