Day 10: La Fortuna to Monteverde via Los Vientos waterfalls

We left La Fortuna this morning to go to Monteverde, a cloud forest in the mountains, by circling around Lake Arenal. Our route was mostly roads filled with potholes and mud.

On the way, we stopped at Los Vientos Waterfalls. Not many people go because of the terrible roads to the trail, but the 4 waterfalls were claimed to be beautiful! But first, we stopped and had lunch at a restaurant with the best Thai salad. The downpour of rain came again as we were finishing up. By the time we arrived to buy our tickets to hike Los Vientos, the rain had stopped. The owner said it was safe to hike and the parking was 5 km away. Those 5 km were the roughest driving so far. Thank goodness for our 4x4!

We were the only ones in the parking lot. There were steps going down to the waterfalls but they were not well maintained and slippery. It was an adventure, but we did it and enjoyed having all the waterfalls to ourselves!

It started raining again as we began our ascent back up to our car. Completely soaked, we jumped into the car and drove the treacherous and now muddy path back out. The roads continued to be bumpy the rest of the way to Monteverde. It was hard to tell if it was foggy and rainy or we were just driving in a cloud!

We picked our next rental house specifically for the beautiful sunsets. Unfortunately, as we pulled in, we were covered in clouds. So instead, we enjoyed a hot bath in the jacuzzi!
