Day 19: Samara to Manuel Antonio via Puntarenas ferry

We got up this morning to the heaviest rainfall we’ve experienced. Lisa and Ted told us that when it rains heavily, you can’t even watch tv or talk because it is so loud. Wow! Now we understand the huge gutters and ditches!

This was our longest “driving” day our whole trip. First we drove for 2 hours around the Nicoya Peninsula. We were hoping to get views of the gulf, but it rained the whole time. We were catching a ferry at Playa Naranjo. Our car was getting on the ferry with us! We arrived 45 mins early to make sure we would get on. It wasn’t a problem at all. Theresa and Ariadne had to get out of the car and get on the boat because they only allowed the drivers to stay. They packed those cars in as tight as possible.

It was only a light drizzle on the 1 hour ferry ride. We were hoping to see a humpback whale even though the season doesn’t begin until July! No luck!

Getting off at Punteranus, we continued our 2.5 drive to Manuel Antonio. We made a quick stop at the famous Crocodile Bridge on the Tarcoles River. This site was known for all the huge crocodiles living below the bridge. We only saw one on each side of the bridge. A local told Clint they used to throw meat down, but the crocodiles were getting aggressive so the government has forbidden it.

We arrived in Manuel Antonio and checked in Hotel Playa Espadilla. We picked this hotel because it was walking distance to the beach and the National park. We were excited that the hotel had a pool, cabanas, and restaurant on site!

After a walk around the beach and town to explore, we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant and enjoyed a brownie dessert!
