Our next destination was Death Valley. We didn't make reservations this time because this was the end of their busy season. It was getting to be too hot for people to want to even go there. So we figured we wouldn't have any trouble getting a spot.
Furnace Creek Campgrounds was basically a huge parking lot they converted into camping sites. We didn't care because it had full hookups and the visitor center was in the same parking lot. We enjoyed another amazing star gazing night!
Death Valley is below sea-level which is a first for us! In late 2015, a 5.5 hour flash-flood devastated the park. Several spots were still closed when we were there. But the flood of 2015, brought the Superbloom of 2016. The huge amount of water allowed for the wild flowers to bloom in record numbers!
Clint wanted to bike to Zabriskie Point which had a great view of Death Valley. He thought the 4 mile ride would be easy because it was up and down small hills. Theresa drove there so she thought the hills weren't that small and it seemed longer than 4 miles. The ranger said it was doable, but it would be hot and go before 10. We left at 10 and getting there wasn't that easy. Theresa and Ariadne wanted to complain, but it would not be fair. Theresa biked herself. Ariadne was being toted around by Clint. Clint was the one who had to pull an extra 40 pounds behind him! The downhills did not help with the up hills. We had a lot of pedaling to do. We think it took us a good 1 to 1.5 hours to get there. We drank all of Clint's camelback as well as most of our 3 water bottles. We considered asking the tour bus in the parking lot for any extra water bottles, but it left before we got back from the viewing point. Going back was exhilarating as we did not have to pedal at all! The view was all worth it!
