Day 13 & 14: New Mexico

We finally made it out of Texas and into New Mexico! We saw the Mexican border and wondered exactly how Trump plans on building that wall!

New Mexico was beautiful. It was amazing how the scenery changed. Our location for the next two nights was Leasburg Dam State Park in Las Cruces. You could not reserve a site, so we were hoping there would be a spot when we got there. We did get a site, but there was no hookups on the site. The ranger even came by and laughed at us and said "You really doing this, huh? You're not taking no for an answer." We weren't sure what he meant, but he didn't make us leave. A man camping there said he was leaving in the morning so we could move over and have electricity and water.

Ariadne loved the playground at this park! It had bridges, slides, and monkey bars. We loved the backdrop of the Organ Mountains. We took a hike down to the Rio Grande River in hopes to go for a dip like we did in Texas. The current was strong and the water was orange, not clear like South Llano Park. Theresa and Ariadne considered venturing in until Clint found a sign that said no swimming! By the time we hiked back to the RV it was getting dark. Clint and Ariadne opted to shower in the RV while Theresa walked to the showers because she preferred to shower without worrying about how much water she was using. She was wrong. The showers had a button you pushed that turned the showers on for 30 seconds. You had to keep hitting the button. The next day she brought Ariadne with her. Ariadne loved hitting the button every time the water went off!

The next morning we drove to Dripping Springs to go on a 2.5 mile hike. The Organ Mountains were in the background as we hiked to see where a "resort" used to be in the 1870s. Halfway up the hike Ariadne got tired (and probably bored). Luckily Theresa packed a lot of snacks and the ranger had given Ariadne a Junior Ranger activity book which had things for her to look for or draw during the hike. During our lunch break at the end of the trail, a chipmunk was peaking out of a hole in the tree at us. We kept Ariadne distracted as much as possible on the way down by stopping frequently to finish her book.

Back at the visitor center, Ariadne earned her first Junior Ranger badge for completing her book and pledging to take care of nature!
