We continued our journey on the Hana Highway by making a quick stop at a stand on the side of the road to get some Macadamian chocolate banana bread! Yum! Just the breakfast we needed to get us started.
We both fell in love with Mile Marker 32-Waianapanapa State Park. The audio guide said to stroll around for 30 minutes. More than two hours later, we strolled out of the park after hiking to a cave to swim and jump into, seeing a blowhole (a spot in the rocks where the harsh ocean water kicks up and shoots through a hole in at the top of a cave), swimming at the black sand beach, and walking through lava tubes (caves formed from flowing lava that goes straight to the ocean).
Finally arriving in Hana around noon, we decided to eat at a roadside Thai place. Everything was outside! The kitchen was under a covered canopy along with tables and chairs. The food was made to order and absolutely fabulous!
Our next stop was the Wailua Falls. This is a very popular stopping stop for tourists on the Hana Highway. Traffic gets really congested at the one lane bridge near the falls. It was probably the prettiest waterfall we have seen! Of course, we trekked down to the bottom and had a quick swim before we left.
Finally, we reached the last destination of Hana Highway. Oheo Gulch "Seven Sacred Pools" is a series of waterfall pools cascading into the ocean. When we pulled into the park, the ranger told us that we couldn't swim in the pools because of the high currents caused by the rain. Oh well it was still beatiful! According to the ranger we could have swam if the water was just trickling. It definitely wasn't trickling today!
The audio tour said this drive would take us 5 hours with all the recommended stops. Well, Clint and Theresa style, we did it in 12 hours!
On the way back to our cottage, we stopped at the only store called Hasegawa General store and picked up grass fed ground beef from Maui and grilled hamburgers at home.
