Day 7 - Waimea Canyon

Today we headed out to Waimea Canyon on the western part of Kauai. We drove along the south shore, which is much more arid than the north. Less vegetation and rain forest, but more sunshine and plenty of nice beaches. After hitting the beach town of Waimea, we turned mauka (away from the coast) and headed up the mountain. We were advised to catch all the sites on the way back down so we could catch good views of the Napali Coast (on the other, wetter side of the same mountain) from above before the clouds rolled in after the sun warmed up the air. The pictures below are actually not far as the crow flies from the hike we did 2 days ago or the sail we took yesterday, but we had to drive all the way around the island to get from sea level to 4000 feet up:

The clouds were already rolling in, but they did give us a nice rainbow while we were up there:

Then we drove back up and started down the canyon side. After stopping at the Koke'e State Park museum and several lookouts along the way, we did the 3.6 mile Canyon Trail down to some great views and a waterfall.

On the way home, we stopped by the resort town of Poipu and had dinner at a beachside restaurant before packing up for our flight to Maui tomorrow.
