We began the morning on the pier of Lake Lucerne looking at Mt. Rigi and Pilatus in the background. Then we went strolling across Chapel Bridge which was a wooden bridge from the 14th centurty. It is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. We were hoping to go up the water tower but were told it could only be used for rented purposes.
From the bridge we could see the Jesuit Church's green onion dome towers and the Meseggmauer, the rampart wall that protected Lucerne.
Next we made our way to view the Lion Monument which was a sculpture dedicated to the Swiss Guards of Louis XVI of France who were massacred in the French Revolution in 1792.
Near the Lion Monument was Glacier Garden. We saw Lucerne's glacier pothole which proved Lake Lucerne and the surrounding valley were carved out of the mountains by glaciers during the Ice Age. We climbed the observation tower to get a great view of Lucerne. With every step we saw plants and rocks that have been here since the ice age. Then we entered the Mirror Maze which had 90 mirrors and you had to find your way out of the maze using the the mirrors.
We were starving, so we stopped and ate at Stadtkeller Swiss Foklore Restaurant. Since it was lunch, the place was empty since most people come for a dinner and show. We, of course, had to try their famous Wiener Schnitzel and Bratwurst!
It was Father's Day, so Ariadne treated Clint with a father/daughter paddle-boat ride on Lake Lucerne!
Our last sightseeing stop in Lucerne was the Church of St. Leodegar, a Roman Catholic Church built during the Renaissance period. When the organ was added to the church in 1640, it was considered the tallest and heaviest one in the world.
To celebrate Father's Day, we stopped at a grocery store to make dinner for Clint. We enjoyed a fully loaded chicken ceasar salad and baguettes with Orangina (sparkling citrus beverage with pulp). Here's to a wonderful father who has planned an incredible trip for his family! Happy Father's Day!
