Day 10 & 11: San Antonio, Texas

We picked the San Antonio KOA as our next destination because it was on the bus line. We knew parking the RV downtown would be tough, so this was a good option. We arrived early evening and decided to just relax. Tomorrow we would spend most of the day at the Riverwalk and Alamo. Clint and Ariadne went to the pond to feed some ducks while Theresa made dinner.

After breakfast and some time on the playground, we headed off for the Riverwalk to explore and have lunch. After camping and hiking in parks for the past few days, we were really disappointed with the Riverwalk. It was beautiful and well designed for pedestrian strolling, but too commercialized for us. It reminded us of an outside mall.

We picked The Original Mexican Restaurant (not a very "original" name) because it was one of the oldest restaurants on the Rverwalk as well as it was on the river. We has some margaritas with our lunch and enjoyed the ducks swimming in the river. Clint wanted to attempt the Cholo Loco burrito challenge. It was a 9lb burrito you had to finish in 30 mins. and the $30 meal would be free. Theresa said Clint could attempt the challenge but she and Ariadne would not order for 30 mins because they would have to help him finish that 9 lb burrito after 30 mins! Plus Clint knew we still we planning on walking to the Alamo. A 9 lb burrito in his belly probably would not be fun on a Alamo tour in San Antonio heat! In the end, after the waiter told Clint he doesn't like to sell the burrito to any of his customers, we decided on some refreshing margaritas and normal portion meals.

The Alamo was crowded and the guided tour was sold out so we toured it by ourselves. The Battle at the Alamo was between Texans (Americans who moved to this Mexican territory) and Mexico. Mexico won and killed all the Texan soldiers. "Remember the Alamo" was the battle cry of the next siege that the Texans won over Mexico to reclaim the Alamo.

It was interesting to learn what was the original Alamo and what parts were added on later. We enjoyed the Living History Encampment where they reenacted what life was like during the Alamo. We saw the different types of guns they used at one location and how a quarter back then was really a piece of silver broken into four pieces. There was even a reenactment of what it was like to be a doctor back then.

When we got back to the RV campgrounds, we went swimming in the pool. One thing we realized that was nice about staying in a private RV campground versus a state/national park were the amenities (pool, playground, paved roads, laundry facilities).
