Day 101: Raleigh, NC

After saying good bye to the Crabbs, we left West Virginia for the 2 day journey to our final stop on the adventure: some relaxing beach time on the Outer Banks with Clint's parents. We needed a halfway spot to stop overnight and thought of Theresa's cousin who lives outside of Raleigh, NC. It was last minute, but she was gracious enough to let us stay with her.

We did have our worst mishap on this ride. Theresa was driving east outside of Greensboro toward Raleigh when there was a loud bang and a fine powder went everywhere in the coach. Theresa screamed, but, luckily, did not swerve or slam on the breaks as we were in heavy traffic. We quickly realized that a large, heavy metal plate was lodged in our windshield. Theresa gradually worked the RV to the shoulder where we assessed the damage. A large part of the windshield just left of center was shattered with cracks everywhere and there were pieces of glass all over the inside of the coach. Theresa had a cut on her head and Clint had a small shard of glass in his thigh, but we were thankful no one was hurt further. Presumably, the plate was thrown up in the air from another vehicle off the road, but it impacted about 10 feet off the ground so it was very high. The police were little help so, after some debate, we stopped a truck stop at the next exit, taped up the windshield, vacuumed out the glass, and kept on going.

We were much later than expected to Theresa's cousins, but she was nice enough to have gotten us food from her favorite Chinese restaurant. We talked with her and Ariadne tried to play with their dogs, though they were not as used to kids as the Crabbs dog and scared her. We were glad to have real beds to sleep in (and as it turns out, we won't sleep in the RV any more) and were exhausted after an eventful day.
